Shockwave Therapy

Chronic injuries can impact the quality of your life. I see lots of patients who find that some regular pain medications don’t help the pain and discomfort they are feeling.

I find Shockwave helps speed up the healing of painful joints, tendons and ligaments and can have positive pain relief outcomes where other modalities just don’t seem to work. I use a non-invasive radial shockwave device because it allows me to target specific areas safely and effectively and helps the body repair injuries that might be troublesome.

How it works

Shockwaves involve application of sonic sound wave energy using compressed air through the body, acting like trigger points, and increasing blood flow, cell growth and stimulate collagen, healing and repair. The sound waves target injured tissues, encouraging a pro inflammatory response and speeding up the healing response at a cellular level. The waves can also be used to break down stiff calcifications in the body and provide temporary analgesic effects on the afferent nerves which relieve pain patterns. It is very successful in the use of fibrous tissues and scars helping increase mobility and comfort over time.

A shockwave applicator works into the skin with ultrasound gel which transmits the waves through the body, acting like trigger points and increasing blood flow. Shockwave can be adjusted to begin on a light frequency to allow your body to get used to the sensation. Over time, treatments can be increased in power to get maximum benefit. Shockwaves aid the body’s self-healing mechanisms and there are no known side effects to treatment. Sometimes, you can feel a little achy afterwards and you may react slightly to areas that have been causing pain recently. A full medical history is required prior to treatment. Each session is a short duration of 3-5 minutes on an area where 2500 impulses of the waves are delivered. Ideally treatments should be over a 3-week period once a week. Pain relief may be felt immediately but long-term effects are normally seen after 3 months.

Shockwave has been around a long time

I use a Storz Masterplus machine which is the latest technology is medical shockwave equipment. Storz work closely with researchers and leading medical institutes to facilitate research and innovation in cardiology, orthopaedics, rheumatology, rehabilitation medicine, aesthetic medicine, and dermatology. NICE as well as The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence approves its use for several musculoskeletal conditions.

Common conditions shockwave can help with:

  • Plantar fasciitis (pain under your foot)

  • Medial tibial stress syndrome (shin splints)

  • Tennis elbow (pain on the outer part of your elbow)

  •  Golfer’s elbow (pain on the inner side of the elbow)

  • Patellofemoral syndrome (runner’s knee)

  • Iliotibial band syndrome (pain that runs along your hip and side of the leg)

  • Heel spurs

  • Achilles tendinopathy (at the back of the ankle)

  • Calcific tendonitis including the shoulder

  • Greater trochanter pain syndrome (pain at the side of the hip)

  • Hamstring tendinopathy

Here are some of the contraindications for treatment:

  • Pregnancy

  • Areas involving lung tissue

  • Cardiac pacemaker

  • Corticosteroid injection over the past 3 months

  • Cancer and those undergoing treatment for cancer

  • Open wounds or rashes

  • Infected or inflamed areas

  • Vascular or ischemic disease

  • Latex allergies

  • Blood thinning medication or blood clotting disorders
